By adding French doors nearly any home can have extra light and beauty. One of the things that French doors add to your home is something that realtors refer to as curb appeal. Opening up onto a patio and making a smooth transition from the outdoors to the indoors or opening up between two rooms to make your home seem more spacious is something that the doors do well. In this article we will look at some of the materials that are used in modern construction of French doors as well as a bit of the history behind them and how modern designers have found new uses for these beautiful functional works of art.

The origin of the French door can be found in the common window. The casement window began its evolution from the common window at some time during the French Renaissance period. At first windows on the second floors of homes began to grow downwards to meet the floor. It was only a matter of time until someone decided to extend the windows upwards and convert them into doors. These original French doors contained individual pieces of glass known as lites separated by wooden dividers known as mullions. These doors looked very much like windows with individual pieces of glass separated by wooden dividers known as millions. A 10 light French door would be the name for a door containing 10 pieces of glass, as the number of glass pieces began to be used as a naming convention for these doors.

The original construction materials were wooden frames and dividers holding individual single paned pieces of glass. uPVC and aluminum are often used in the construction of these doors today due to their light weight and excellent strength. Manufactures today often choose to achieve the divided look by using a single sheet of double pane glass overlaid by a grid rather than using multiple pieces of glass in one door. Manufacturers are using creative and innovative techniques to create these doors today. To provide for privacy and to keep out light some manufactures have began to install miniblinds between the sheets of glass. Innovations such as this are just a sample of the creativity that manufacturers are using today to create these doors.

As the needs and wants of consumers have gotten more and more creative, designers are continually coming up with new methods and ideas to keep up with those needs and wants. For example, restaurant owners are often looking for ways to expand the square footage of their facilities to provide extra seating. The needs of these restaurant owners were met by a replacing entire wall sections with a series of bi-folding French doors. It seems that the uses for French doors are limited only by our imaginations.
